Apparently the river names Exe and Wye share this origin; while Avon also just means &#8216;river&#8217;. In the days when people lived by just one river and rarely walked further than the nearest market town, &#8216;the river&#8217; must have been a sufficient name.\u00a0 As well as these etymologies, Tolkien would have liked the gnarled Old Forest oak trees beside the river, very mossy at the base, gripping the sandstone rocks with their roots.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_166\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-166\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.obsessedbynature.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DSCN0087-Common-Cup-Lichen.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-166\" alt=\"Common Cup Lichen\" src=\"http:\/\/www.obsessedbynature.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DSCN0087-Common-Cup-Lichen-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.obsessedbynature.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DSCN0087-Common-Cup-Lichen-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.obsessedbynature.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DSCN0087-Common-Cup-Lichen-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-166\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Common Cup Lichen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lichens grew to good size in the clean air.
