We then hammered them into the very squishy mud of the main erosion channel, and did our best to weave the binders around them. They were a little dry and we heard a few ominous cracks, but in the main they wove in and out pretty well. I rescued this female Stag Beetle from a mat of weed in the pond: she seemed fine, holding on to my finger. Today I managed to photograph one, which obligingly &#8220;hid&#8221; under a rhododendron leaf (yeah, we have some) and it&#8217;s the Common White Wave, <em>Cabera pusaria<\/em>. It&#8217;s one of some 20 species he&#8217;s expertly noted in the reserve. A <em>Volucella pellucens<\/em>, the very large black and white species (with a pellucid whitish band on its abdomen, you really can see light through it) hovered unphotographably overhead.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4695\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4695\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.obsessedbynature.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/DSCN6675-orange-hoverfly.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4695\" src=\"http:\/\/www.obsessedbynature.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/DSCN6675-orange-hoverfly-300x269.jpg\" alt=\"A handsome orange hoverfly\" width=\"300\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.obsessedbynature.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/DSCN6675-orange-hoverfly-300x269.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.obsessedbynature.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/DSCN6675-orange-hoverfly-768x689.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.obsessedbynature.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/DSCN6675-orange-hoverfly-1024x918.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4695\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Another smart orange and black hoverfly on Hogweed, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Eristalis horticola<\/span>, a new species for the reserve<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Hogweed with its large white flowerheads is proving extremely attractive to different species of bees (honeybees, Andrena, Megachile leafcutters), bumblebees (tree, garden, buff-tailed, and others) and hoverflies, including this smart orange and black one. Mike says it&#8217;s a male <em>Eristalis horticola<\/em>, a new species for the reserve.
